Week 1 On the yard and at the Martin Vanburen Presidential Estate

Posted on May 5, 2019 at 9:55 PM

Some time ago, Roger, who is a good customer of ours from Home Brew Emporium and now Emporium Farm Brewery, told us about hops on the President Vanburen property in Kinderhook, NY. We tried to contact the National Park Service to see how we could help, but had no luck. Fast forward a month or two, the National Park Service were referred to us by Cornell Cooperative Extension. I just could not believe it!

In the fall we paid a visit and cleaned up the sole bine for the winter. We discussed some simple plans for the following spring and here we are. See the video below for a snippit.

The rhizome is so complex. In speaking to the NYS Farm Museum, they think it is a very great possibility this is an actual rhizome from 1855. It may not be the original plant but the rhizome travels each year. We plan to get the DNA tested but haven’t had luck yet. The museum thought maybe it was a cluster hop but I am not convinced. The proof is in the pudding.

Fingers crossed we can get DNA sooner than later.
